He was born in Akhisar, Manisa in 1962. He graduated from Istanbul Pertevniyal High School in 1979 and from Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine in 1986. He was a physician in Istanbul Eminönü Municipality for a little while after his graduation. Finishing his doctorate in the field of history of medicine and ethics in 2003, Hakan Ertin became an assistant professor in 2009 and associate professor in 2014. He still works as a faculty member in the Department of History of Medicine and Ethics in Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine. He is a member to national institutions such as History of Turkish Medicine and Bioethics Association of Turkey, and to international institutions such as the International Society for Cultural History and the International Society for the History of Medicine. He was the editor of editorial books including Tıp ve Fetva, Hayatın Başlangıcı ve Sonu, Health Culture and Human Body. He is married and has 2 children. He speaks English.
