‘Peer is an educator to peers!’

Professor Hasan Bacanlı, dean of the Education Faculty at Biruni University,

answered our questions about peer education: Which age group is peer

education beneficial for in particular? Does it work for adults? Which addiction

is it effective for? What are the characteristics of a peer educator?

When and why is peer education necessary?

There are some subjects that a teacher cannot discuss in class or some topics

which cannot be found in the curriculum. Peer education comes in this point.

Since young people experience similar difficulties, they can better evaluate

the situations their peers go through. Peer education is more beneficial when

it comes to emotional matters. Additionally, there is an inevitable generation

gap between students and teachers. That is why peers can understand each

other’s needs, problems and troubles in a deeper way.
