The “10thAnnual Conferenceof the International Society for theStudyofDrugPolicy (ISSDP),”
whichbrings together thedecisionmakers, researchersand representativesof nongovernmental
organizations in theareaof drugpolicies,washeld inSydney, AustraliaonMay 16-18. GreenCrescent
madepresentations titled “Civil SocietyEfforts inNational DrugPolicy” andAddictionPrevention
TrainingProgramof Turkey (TBM)” in theconferencesessions.
Green Crescent developed amobile application throughwhich you can report violations aimed
at the smoke ban: Green Detector. The aim, through this application developed in collaboration
with the HealthMinistry, is to report the locations where the smoke ban is violated, tominimize
violations and raise public awareness on this topic.

T
his year the 10th of the annual
academic conferences organized
by the International Society for the
Study of Drug Policy (ISSDP), was hos-
ted by the National Drug and Alcohol Re-
search Centre (NDARC) on May 16-18 in
Sydney. The conference was attended by
expert researchers from a vast range of
areas such as criminology, public health,
economy, law, politics, sociology, public
administration and psychology. Throu-
ghout the conference, the global and lo-
cal dynamics in determining drug policies
were discussed with examples of various
applications fromaround theworld.
While particularly the UN’s UNGASS re-
sults were evaluated at the conference,
the differences made in states’ drug po-
licies were stressed with examples from
different countries. The science-based
harm reduction practices applied in this
regard especially in Asian countries were
explained. Discussions were held at the
endof eachsession,withparticipantsand
speakers exchanging ideas.
Green Crescent, an ISSDP member since
2011, had participated in the past confe-
rences aswell.This year’s conferencewas
attended by Executive Board members
AssociateProfessorMehmetAkif Seylan,
Attorney Osman Baturhan Dursun, As-
sociate Professor Azize Nilgün Canel and
Green Crescent General Manager Savaş
Yılmaz. Green Crescent made presenta-
tions on Civil Society and Prevention in
Turkey in the conference’s panel sessions.

n collaboration with the Health Ministry, Green Crescent developed a mobi-
le application that allows for reporting violations concerning the smoke ban.
ThemobileapplicationnamedYeşil Dedektör (GreenDetector)wasdeveloped
to ensure compliance to the law on consuming tobacco products in indoor are-
as, which took effect in 2008, to create public awareness against its violation, to
protect the rights of peoplewho do not smoke, and to informthemon their legal
rights. This mobile application, aiming to minimize the violations by shopowners
and customers, canbeusedbydownloading it on telephones or tablets.With the
Green Detector mobile application, the user is able to report the violation by se-
lecting the location and venue. The reports that reach the Health Ministry’s ins-
pection systemare forwarded to the HealthMinistry’s field inspection team. The
field inspection teams visit the venue reported to commit the violation, perform
the inspection and carry out the necessary procedures.The aim is to protect the
rights of non-smokers, ensure the ban is abided by and violations areminimized
through thisone-of-a-kindapplication in itsfield.Theapplicationcanbedownlo-
