SPRING 2015
It was a natural outcome for me as
you have to stand on your own
feet among the huge crowd of
students at a boarding school. In
such hierarchical order, you have
to secure a place for yourself. You
have no chance but find a balance
and protect yourself from getting lost.
Mustafa Sandal is the summary of all those
struggles.
Obviously, you inherited a passion from your
grandfather. Was it not risky to go on with music
instead of the field you received education?
Indeed! While my family was expecting me to become
a company manager, I quit school in the US and said,
“I don’t want this kind of life! I will make my own fate
with music.” I can speak three languages. My family
had to sacrifice much so as to send me to Switzerland
for education. After all their efforts, I spoke up “Music
is my thing!”. For that matter, it was a real shock for
them. But, I really believed in myself, lent an ear to
what I wanted at heart. God enlightened my way and
my dreams came true. To me, what lays behind my
success was the true passion in my soul. I truly loved
music, I had set my mind that I could not live without
music.
I SET MY GOALS CLEARLY
I suppose what you led to success was not only
talent but also hard work...
Oh, no wonder! In the evenings at weekends, my
friends used to go out while I was working at the
studio. There was a music hall at the school, where I
used to play the piano and wrote lyrics. My goal was
clear. I did not regard all those hours at the music hall
as work. Rather, it was love to me. So, I don’t say I
would work so much. My friends would try to take
me out saying, “Are you crazy? What are you doing
in there?”
You have been in the sector for so long. Besides,
we watch you in films, in TV programs. People find
you sincere and responsible. Actually, our people
do not give a long-lasting place for stars who
are a not sincere. For that matter, can you
describe your character?
My first privilege is sincerity, and
then comes positive energy.
How you evaluate the life
bears utmost importance.
One might choose to
frame any given incident
in a negative way, which
is easier. Alternatively,
one might enjoy trying to
shape any negative matter
into a more positive one.
That means a lot to me. I find it
important to get and reflect positive
energy in life. People must enjoy the
moment. As I can build a real communication with
you, this is precious for me. People often tend to
skip this point. Our minds often worry about the
past and the future. People always have a hustle
in their minds. Namely, we are naturally prone to
feed ourselves from the worry; however, what
we need is to be aware and get through this. So,
when someone comes up with a problem, here
is my question: “Is there any possible solution to
this anywhere? If yes, “Then, you should change
your attitude in no time,” I say. If there is a solution
anywhere and anyhow, what you have is not a
problem.
Some of your songs are still popular. Well, when
the evolution of the music sector is kept in mind,
can you compare the 90s with today?
90s were a time when a unique energy influenced
people. It was kind of magical. Songs of 90s were
not bound by time. They were not meant to be
forgotten in three months or a year. Like Sezen
Aksu’s song “Hadi Bakalım” or mine, “Onun Arabası
Var”. These songs have proven to be timeless!
Why? Because, they were written out of real
emotions at heart. They don’t bear any traces of
worry in them. Today such songs are rare.
Drug
addiction is
sometimes even
worse than death.
One can find himself
in the middle of the
inferno at a spur of
the moment!
