A panel of seven people from the Turkish Green Crescent
Society visited San Patrignano community, a drug
treatment and rehabilitation community in Italy. Vice

Adıgüzel, Dr. Ahmet Özdinç, Green Crescent General
Manager Savaş Yılmaz, Green Crescent Science Board
Member Mehmet Dinç and Green Crescent staff Gülay
Bostancı received information about how to fight against
addiction and what kind of treatment methods there
are by talking with the officials from San Patrignano
community.
1600 drug addicted people are provided with treatment
and rehabilitation in this center which is based in Italy.
Also, most of the employees are either volunteers or
they have been rehabilitated in the same center before.
This center is not using only psychological therapy
or psychiatric treatment to treat drug addiction. This
center aims to reintroduce people to the society and
addicted people coming to this center cannot leave it
without finishing 3 or 4 years of rehabilitation program
which is determined according to the condition of the
person. The aim is to treat drug addiction by keeping
people busy with something and make people have a
profession before leaving the center. When people who
are addicted before come to the center campus, they are
appointed to a position at a workshop independently of
their tendencies and they are supposed to work here at
least two years. Only if they complete their time in their
positions, they can be transferred any department in
the community at own request. At the same time, they
are given a chance to continue their education at the
education center within the community if they want.
Moreover, people are allowed to leave the center campus
daily to go to university if they want to continue their
post-secondary education.

addiction can be treated successfully.
