STOP DIABETES,
CANCER AND EVEN
DEPRESSION AND
CHRONIC FATIGUE!
THE KEY TO
HEALTHY LIVING:
Physical inactivity is the main reason behind many problems in modern life. Being serious problem in
Turkey and all over the world, it paves the way for many diseases. The Ministry of Health is running
significant campaigns to counteract inactivity which affect more and more people young and old alike
with the rapid development in technology.
Idleness, which emerges as a very serious problem in
Turkey just like in the rest of theworld, affectsmore and
more peoplewith each passing day. However, recent
studies have revealed the importance of exercise and
dailywalking routines not only tomaintain health but
also to prevent chronic diseases. It has been proven that
treating diseases such as diabetes, hypo/hypertension,
cardiovascular diseases, calcification, osteoporosis and
hyperlipidemia (an abnormally high concentration of fats
or lipids in the blood) with pharmaceutical drugs is not
enough.
TheMinistry of Health is works on projects to emphasize
the importance of exercise for healthy living. Public
awareness is slowly increasing as a result of warnings
fromexperts and the “10.000 Steps a Day Campaign”
which aims to encouragewalking and fight against
obesity and other chronic diseases. Nowadays, it is
possible to see people taking regular, briskwalks on
walking tracks and beaches. However, the number of
peoplewho actually exercise is very lowwhen compared
to the entire population and there is still a longway to go.
Professor Tolga Aydoğ, a doctor of sportsmedicine and a
physical therapy and rehabilitation expert, says: “Patients
cannot get their diseases under control unless they pay
attention to their diets and exercise; regardless of the
medicines they take. It is a crystal-clear fact that exercise
is amust to protect the body frommany diseases ranging
fromobesity, cancer, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes
to COPD, fibromyalgia, depression and chronic fatigue.”
CHILDREN SPEND TOOMUCH TIME IN
FRONT OF COMPUTERS
Exercise and regular walking aren’t given the due
importance in Turkey or theworld, says Professor Aydoğ.
He adds that the inactive lifestyle that is the result of
rapidly developing technology in themodern age threatens
all people fromseven to seventy. Childrenwho sit in front
of computers and playwith smart phones and tablets are
also affected by this inactive lifestyle. Countless hours
spent in front of computers and children staying indoors
rather than playing in parks and gardens causesmany
serious diseases including obesity, the epidemic of our
generation. “The number of children and adults who have
health problems stemming froma lack of physical activity
