KUTAHYA CERAMICS ON THE WAY TO

UNESCO

Kütahya is one of the most significant centers for the production of Turkish ceramics, a craft which

peaked during the Ottoman Empire period in the 16th century. Recently, a project has been launched

to carry into the international arena.

Ministry of Culture and Tourismand

Kütahya Chamber of Ceramists

collaborated to draft an application

to the United Nations Educational,

Scientific and Cultural Organization

(UNESCO) to add Kütahya ceramics

-which are among the traditional

handicrafts and glamorizemosques,

palaces and caravansaries for nearly

600 years- to the List of Intangible

Cultural Heritage. Sadık Erilbaylı,

president of Kütahya Chamber of

Ceramists, says that they have come a

longway since they started the process

in cooperationwith theMinistry of

Culture and Tourism two years ago.

Ottoman porticos, whichwere removed fromaround the Kaaba by the Saudi Arabian government within the scope of a project

to expand Haramal-Sharif (The TempleMount), were reassembled thanks to the efforts of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The reassembled Ottoman porticos welcome theMuslimsmaking the pilgrimage toMecca.
