YEŞiLAY

SPRING 2015

they like. Make sure that they would feel special and safe by

your side.

Communicate with them on their level.

Try kneeling or crouching down while making an eye con-

tact. Make sure that your eyes are on the same level with

your child’s. This would enable you to communicate more

easily. Try to address them as “son” or “daughter” rather

than other forms of address such as buddy or friend since

those might confuse them. Teach them and completely be

with themwhile playing games. Shut down and put aside

your mobile phone or tablet. Focus completely on your

activities with your children. With the games you play, teach

them sharing, working as a team and the joy of producing

together.

Allow them to make mistakes

Make them understand that what really matters is not the

result but the process itself, and taking action for a cer-

tain goal is important. Instead of criticizing them for their

mistakes, talk with them. Do not neglect appreciating their

efforts.

Do not lift them up when they fall down and do not under-

take the tasks they can do

Otherwise, they would think it is natural to expect

everything from others. They will develop self-confidence as

they achieve to complete their own tasks by themselves and

learn to stand up after falling down.

Assign them responsibilities

Assign them small responsibilities such as taking care of

their pets or flowers. When they fulfill their tasks, reward

themwith praising words. If they neglect the tasks, do not

criticize or display a negative attitude. Encourage them to

fulfill their responsibilities.

Support their artistic tendencies

Appreciate all the pictures they draw. Encourage them to

sing the songs they learn. Sing along with them. Watch them

while they are displaying their creative tendencies. Children

love to be watched by their parents while doing something.

Keep in mind that they copy your behaviors, not your words

Being consistent is the key rule of raising children. If your

words and actions do not cohere, you might lose their trust.

Your behaviors will guide them. Do not forget that you are

their greatest role model and they copy your every action.
