TURKEY'S REHABILITATION
MODEL IS READY
T
he Turkish Green Crescent Society comes up with inno-
vative and prominent projects in many areas as part of its
efforts to combat the individual and social ills of tobacco, al-
coholanddrugsandconductpreemptiveandpreventiveaswellas
rehabilitative activities. The Society has developed the "Turkey's
Rehabilitation Model" project which is essential for the rehabilita-
tion activities, particularly for facilitating the recovery of drug ad-
dicts and their integrationwith thesociety. With thisnovel project,
it is planning to develop a rehabilitation model that is compatible
with cultural and social characteristics of our country and to re-
inforce the interconnections among treatment, rehabilitation and
socializationprocesses and to increase theeffectivenessof these
processes.
Amodel unique toTurkey
Therehavebeengreatstrides incombatingdrugaddictionandthe
developments in partnership between the public sector and non-
governmental organizations (NGOs) have been particularly fruit-
ful. However, the absence of amodel, especially related to the re-
habilitationprocess,hasbeenfeltstrongly,giventheneedforsuch

onal and sustainable rehabilitation center and system is expected
to be created with the participation of the Ministry of Health, the

Turkey's Rehabilitation Model will make use of the best practices
around the world while giving particular attention to diverse risk
statuses, regional characteristics and socio-cultural background
of the country.Theone-year projectwill result inaholistic system
containing an operation model, investment feasibility, proposed
incentive system, accreditation of the centers and required legis-
lation changes. The aim is to assert this model as a reference for
all rehabilitation centers to be established in Turkey. The project is
being conducted with assistance from the leading global consul-
ting firm McKinsey & Company as well several local and foreign
experts.
"Efficiencywill be boosted from treatment to socialization of ad-
dicts"
Turkish Green Crescent Society President Prof. Dr. Mücahit Öz-
türknotes that theSocietyhas been combatingaddictions for 96
years and they will examine the best practices across the globe
and develop a model that is most suitable for the country under
the Turkey's RehabilitationModel project. "Thismodeling initiative
seeks to create a sustainable service model that contains more
holistic elements instead of adopting a perspective specifical-
ly geared toward patients, treatment centers or social support.
Accordingly, an efficiency boost is expected in all processes ran-
ging from drug addiction treatment to socialization thanks to the
arrangements to be made based on this model. We believe that
the resulting work will be a model also for other countries in the
world. I hope that the results of this projectwill bebeneficial toour
country," hesaid.
