The "Training on Addiction Awareness for Local Media" heldwithin the scope of the Program for
Media Capacity Building Against Addictions initiated by Green Crescent in collaborationwit the
BYEGM, were completedwith a programorganized in Ankara on December 15. The training sessions
that took place in seven different locations in Turkey andwhich sawgreat interest from journalists,
were aimed at conveying the addictions-related news stories published in the press use non-
encouraging language and avoiding to normalize it.

heTrainingonAddictionAwareness for Local MediaProg-
ramdeveloped jointly by Green Crescent and the General
Directorate of Press Information (BYEGM) was comple-
ted with the training in Ankara. The objective of the Training on
Addiction Awareness for Local Media Programwhich saw great
interest from journalists, is to ensure the format and discourse
of the news stories about drug addiction, one of our country’s
most important problems, are corrected, and members of the
media are informed in this area.
The training program held in eight different provinces, starting
in October in İzmir and running through to December, was pa-
riticipated by approximately 1,700 journalists in 7 city from all
over Turkey. While press members were told especially of the
importance of avoiding making news in a way that will lead to
normalization or motivation on the topic of drugs, they were
also given information on the use of correct and effective lan-
guage in communication and on drug use. The training in the
program attended by Green Crescent General Manager Savaş
Yılmaz and BYEGMGeneral Manager Mehmet Akarca was given
by Green Crescent Scientific Committee president, Istanbul Şe-
hir University Communication Faculty Dean Professor Peyami
Çelikcan.
“We are very pleased with the interest of media members”
Green Crescent General Manager Savaş Yılmaz, who stated
that they attach great importance to the role of the press in
the fight against addictions and that they are happy with the
intense participation in the training programs held to date, said:
“Within the scope of the Training on Addiction Awareness for
Local Media Programwe reached about 1,500 journalists within
the last twomonths. We are very pleasedwith the interest they
have shown in the training programs. I believe that we are going
to progress evenmore effectively in our struggle nowwith gre-
ater support from the media.”
Explaining that the way the news stories are approached in the
media, the language and photographs used carry great impor-
tance, that the training programs have helped make important
way in terms of creating awareness on these subjects, Yılmaz
said, “We made this programmore effective with workshops in
addition to providing theoretical information. Media members
have always been our most important supporters in the fight
against addictions. From now on, this cooperation is going to
become even stronger. We also thank BYEGM for its support in
this scope.”
The training programs emphasized especially the importance of
avoidingmaking news in away that will lead lead to normalizati-
on or motivation with aim on to create awareness on the use of
correct and effective language in communication.
