International Leaders in Scientific Publishing on Addiction Gather in Istanbul
Leading international figures in scientific publishing on addiction gathered in Istanbul for the Annual Meeting and General Assembly of the International Society of Addiction Journal Editors (ISAJE). Held to mark the 25th anniversary of ISAJE’s founding, the meeting took place at Sepetçiler Pavilion on September 8–9, 2026. The event was hosted by the Turkish Green Crescent Society and Addicta: The Turkish Journal on Addictions, Green Crescent’s international peer-reviewed academic journal.
Founded in 2001, ISAJE works to advance the quality of journals publishing research on addiction. The meeting brought together representatives of member journals to discuss the current challenges facing addiction journals and key priorities for the future. Discussions focused on the challenges researchers whose first language is not English face when publishing in international journals, the responsibilities of editorial teams, and difficulties in finding reviewers and managing the peer-review process.
“Faster Publishing Does Not Mean Better Publishing”
ISAJE President Neo Morojole said that the impact of artificial intelligence on scientific publishing was one of the key topics discussed at the meeting.
“Artificial intelligence has become a major topic of discussion in recent years and presents an important challenge for us. It may help us publish more quickly, but that does not necessarily mean we are producing better publications.”
Quality and Inclusivity in Scientific Publishing Discussed
Prof. Hakan Coşkunol, Editor-in-Chief of Addicta and a member of the Scientific Committee of the Turkish Green Crescent Society, highlighted ISAJE’s role in raising the quality of scientific publishing on addiction. Coşkunol said:
“The main purpose of these meetings is to discuss the challenges faced by journals publishing research on addiction around the world and to develop solutions to address them.”
Coşkunol also stressed the need to make scientific research and knowledge on addiction more inclusive.
Role of Scientific Publishing in Addressing Addiction Highlighted
Prof. Volkan Kara, Section Editor for Tobacco Addiction at Addicta and a member of the Scientific Committee of the Turkish Green Crescent Society, welcomed the opportunity for Green Crescent and Addicta to host the meeting. He said he expected the meeting to generate valuable outcomes for the field of addiction:
“Green Crescent plays an active role in addressing addiction through a wide range of efforts, including prevention, advocacy, treatment and rehabilitation, as well as bringing scientific research to the public.”
Kara also noted that Addicta accepts high-quality research on addiction from scientists in Türkiye and around the world, maintains a print archive of these publications, and makes them available to the wider scientific community.
